Silk fusion (or silk paper) is the art of creating your own custom silk fabric using silk roving, recycled sari silks, specialty fibers such as Angelina fibers and metallic threads in layers using fabric medium as the ‘glue’ for each layer. You can then paint or embellish as you see fit. Silk fusion can be used in printing, stamping, origami, quilting, jewelry, wearable art, book coverings, embroidery etc. If you are interested in learning more about the process, Treenway Silks is a great source of information and supplies related to silk fusion.
For this class, you simply show up! Michele will bring all the supplies necessary for you to create several blocks of silk fusion. This is a two day class. For the first day, students will learn how to layer the silk roving, how to include embellishments within the silk layers and how to apply fabric medium to the layers properly to achieve complete bonding of the layers. The silk fusion must dry overnight before it can be handled. On the second day, paints/glues/embellishments can be added to the final product which can be cut into pieces to be used in mixed media.
